July 2015, Commentary by Bruno Cadoré, Master of the Order of Preachers

From July 5th to the 12th, 2015, a week of reflection on the present state of the monastic and religious vocations was held in Taizé (Burgundy), on the occasion of the Year of Consecrated Life. Brother Aloïs, Prior of the Taizé community, invited Bruno Cadoré, Master of the order of Preachers, to speak about the challenges of a religious vocation. Father Cadoré first expressed his emotion to be back in Taizé, the place where the desire for religious life first came to him. Then he listed the challenges to a person who has a religious vocation as challenges of humanity, friendship, and calling. He described the challenge of transfigured humanity as the slow work of fraternity in which the gifts of each person are placed at the service of all for communion. As for the second challenge to a religious, he continued, it is about the possibility of friendship between people and God, of friendship between God who is “capable of the human person,” and the human person who is “capable of God.” Finally, for Fr. Cadoré, the challenge of a calling is that of a personal encounter with God as well as of courage for reconciliation. A religious vocation aims to be for others “a calling” to freedom, trust, and communion.
